Tema International School Presents: The Adaptation of Secret of an Ancient Well – A Journey Through Ghanaian Heritage

This year, Tema International School (TIS) is thrilled to bring to the stage, Secret of an Ancient Well, a powerful adaptation of Yaw Asare’s classic Ghanaian play. Set to premiere on Friday, 8 November, for the TIS community and Saturday, 9 November, for parents, alumni, and friends, the production promises an immersive experience that celebrates storytelling, African culture, and the enduring themes of love, sacrifice, and self-discovery.

About the Play – Secret of an Ancient Well transports audiences to the ancient kingdom of Jinji, where a forbidden love between Zuzu, a young cattle-boy, and Iseda, a local maiden, is torn apart when Iseda is chosen to marry the aging King Ndongo. As war erupts between Jinji and a neighbouring kingdom years later, Iseda’s son, Soglo—now a warrior—unknowingly captures his real father, Zuzu. Their reunion unearths secrets around the kingdom’s ancient well, setting off a dramatic exploration of family, destiny, and the weight of long-buried truths. Rooted in African folklore, this tale captures the richness of Ghanaian storytelling and tradition.

Director Mawuli Komla Zonyrah, fondly known as Jasparo, describes the production as an invitation to reflect on our shared humanity. “Secret of an Ancient Well is more than just a play; it explores identity, resilience, and community. Through Abibigoro, the production combines music, dance, and participatory performance, inviting the audience to reflect on the hidden truths within themselves.” Jasparo hopes the play will resonate deeply with the audience, sparking introspection long after the curtain falls.

This year’s production has been co-led by senior students and co-directors, Obaapanin Tweneboah-Koduah and Peyton Kidd (G12). Reflecting on their journey, they share, “Directing has been both surreal and rewarding. We have come to appreciate the depth of commitment and patience in bringing a play to life. We’re grateful to the entire cast, crew, and our teachers for their unwavering support.” For Obaapanin and Peyton, this experience is a full-circle moment, having been mentored as actors in last year’s production of The Prince of Egypt.

“Our annual production is not just a showcase of talent; it’s a testament to the passion and dedication of our students,” says Dr Ken Darvall, Principal. “With Secret of an Ancient Well, our students have brilliantly captured themes that remain just as relevant today as they were when first performed. The commitment, creativity, and teamwork over these past four months have been nothing short of inspiring. Tonight, new stars are born, and we are so grateful for the TIS community’s support.”

Join Us for a Night of Culture and Purpose. TIS warmly invites the community to attend this special performance. Ticket sales for the Saturday show will be available at the gate, with proceeds dedicated to the EducAid Mante Initiative, which supports the refurbishment of the Mante School of Excellence in Afienya.
