President Akufo-Addo Inspects Axim Fishing Port Project

The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has inspected ongoing works at the site of the Axim Fishing Port and Landing Site and the Sea Defence Wall on Tuesday, 18th August 2020 which was the first day of his working visit to the Western Region.

First inspecting work on the construction of the sea defence wall, which is being undertaken by Makam Plant Hire Ltd. (MPH), the project co-ordinator told President Akufo-Addo that, the entire development is expected to be completed in four (4) years.

However, construction work is ahead of schedule as the sea defence wall is now 85% complete, with 4.2 kilometres of the 5-kilometre wall completed.

The project co-ordinator assured that it will be completed on schedule.

Expressing satisfaction about the status of work done so far, the President commended MPH.

President Akufo-Addo subsequently inspected progress of work on the construction of the Axim Fishing Port and Landing Site Project which commenced on 22nd of August 2019.

Richard Mann, the project co-ordinator for China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC), the construction company undertaking the project told the President that so far the project is progressing steadily.

“The breakwater should be completed probably November. The building works which would be starting in September, will likely be finished somewhere in February-March next year. There would be more activities in November-December than you actually see here at the moment,” Richard Mann said.

According to the project co-ordinator, construction of the revetment and breakwater is on-going, entering its final stage and expected to be completed in September 2020.

He added that reclamation is 30% complete, with the fabrication of concrete blocks for the erection of the quay wall is set to be completed in November while the construction of the underwater quay wall is set to be completed in January 2021.

Although the entire fishing port and landing site is currently 42.01% complete, the project co-ordinator assured the President that the Axim Fishing Port and Landing Site Project will be completed as scheduled by September 2021.

The Minister for Transport, Kwaku Ofori-Asiamah, added that additional nine (9) building facilities will be constructed at the site including an administration building, fish market, net mending hall, ice making plant, large workshop, fuel depot, day care, toilet, and a power station.
