Celebrating the 5th Anniversary of Tema International School’s Primary Campus: A Vision Realised

Tema International School (TIS) proudly celebrates the 5th anniversary of its Primary Campus, a significant milestone that coincides with the 21st anniversary of the Secondary Campus. Both campuses unite under the theme, “Embracing Growth: Building a Better World Together,” as they continue their mission of providing holistic, world-class education in Ghana.

This journey reflects the enduring vision of the school’s Co-Founders, the late Mr. A. A. Alphonse Adjavon and Mrs. Comfort Adzo Adjavon. Initially, they envisioned a primary school for their granddaughter, Sonia Ethel Attipoe. Although the focus first shifted to establishing the secondary school, their dream of a primary campus persisted for 16 years. The dream finally became a reality in 2019, with the primary campus being established as a tribute in honour of Mr. A. A. Adjavon’s legacy and memory of Sonia Ethel Attipoe. Mrs. Comfort Adzo Adjavon was instrumental in bringing this dream to life, proudly inaugurating the facility alongside key stakeholders during the opening ceremony.

Progressive Development

The development of the TIS Primary Campus, located in Tema Community 22, unfolded in carefully planned stages:

• Stage One: Completion of the early years department, administrative offices, cafeteria, playground, the initial pavilion for Grades 1 to 6, and a multipurpose arena.

• Stage Two: Addition of new learning spaces, including an art room, music studio, and infirmary.

• Final Stage (Upcoming): Introduction of sports facilities, a new administrative block, library, and facilities aligned with the school’s holistic educational philosophy to cater to the growing needs of students.

Educational Approach and Achievements

TIS Primary Campus follows the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP), emphasising inquiry-based learning. This approach connects academic subjects to real-world issues through transdisciplinary themes, fostering independent, socially responsible, and reflective learners. The curriculum integrates arts, languages, math, science, social studies, and physical education, promoting a balanced educational experience grounded in the 4 Pillars of TIS: Academics, Service, Sports, and Culture.

The appointment of PYP Coordinator Jacob Lumumba, an IB program leader, workshop leader, school visitor and school evaluator, marked a pivotal moment for TIS Primary. With a team of open-minded educators, the school achieved PYP authorisation in a record 19 months, underscoring its commitment to quality education. Since then, students’ learning experiences have been remarkable, showcased through end-of-unit celebrations, special performances, and their adept use of online resources such as Edmentum and Epic.

Growth and Diversity

TIS Primary began with 26 pioneer students and 19 staff members. Today, it serves a diverse community, welcoming students from various nationalities, including Ghanaians, Nigerians, Asians, and Americans. In response to growing demand, the school now offers a shuttle service covering areas such as Community 25, Spintex, and Afienya. To foster a well-rounded development, new enrichment programs like robotics, coding, arts, music, and mother tongue enrichment (Ewe, Ga, and Twi) have been introduced.

Week-Long Celebration Line up

In honour of this milestone, TIS Primary Campus has organised an exciting week of events for students, staff, alumni, and the entire community:

• Monday, 30 September: Special Assembly launching the anniversary celebrations.

• Tuesday, 1 October: Superhero Day – A fun and creative day for students to express themselves.

Future Aspirations

As TIS Primary celebrates its 5th anniversary, it looks to the future with ambitious plans. Dr. Ken Darvall, the principal, declared during the official opening of the Primary Campus that TIS aims to become the best primary school in Ghana, then West Africa, and eventually all of Africa. To achieve this vision, TIS will continue investing in world-class facilities, expanding its curriculum offerings, and integrating innovative technologies to foster 21st-century skills.

The upcoming final development stages will further enhance the campus. By focusing on holistic education and individual student growth, TIS Primary is committed to preparing students to be global citizens ready to thrive in an ever-changing world.
