Hon. Lydia Seyram Alhassan, Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency, has strongly refuted allegations circulating on social media accusing her of orchestrating the arrest of a security officer at the University of Ghana for expressing a dissenting political opinion.
In a statement released by her office, she described the claims as “false and malicious propaganda” aimed at tarnishing her reputation and undermining her dedication to the University of Ghana community.
The MP emphasized her unwavering commitment to fairness and inclusivity, asserting that her engagements with the University community have always been nonpartisan.
“I have never based my engagements on political preferences, nor have I ever sought to silence dissenting voices,” she stated. She highlighted her history of collaboration with students, lecturers, and workers, underscoring her focus on addressing their needs irrespective of political affiliations.
Hon. Alhassan clarified that her recent meeting with campus security personnel, which was misconstrued in the allegations, was part of her ongoing efforts to enhance campus safety.
She explained that the meeting aimed to identify challenges faced by security officers and provide the necessary resources to ensure the safety of students, particularly ahead of the upcoming elections.
Over the years, the MP has made significant contributions to improving campus security, including the provision of vehicles, motorbikes, and streetlights to increase security personnel’s visibility and prevent crime. She expressed disappointment that her efforts had been twisted into baseless accusations.
In her statement, Hon. Alhassan reaffirmed her commitment to the students of the University of Ghana, describing them as the “heart of this great institution.” She urged the University community to disregard the propaganda and assess her track record of delivering results.
“As your Member of Parliament, I see your concerns, value your aspirations, and remain committed to creating an environment where you can thrive without fear or insecurity,” she said.
Hon. Alhassan concluded by encouraging constituents to vote for her and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the December 7 elections, promising continued efforts to build a secure and prosperous future for the University of Ghana and the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency.
