Contrary to his public claims of receiving no government support, documents have surfaced revealing that Hon. Kwadjo Asante, the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Suhum Constituency, has benefited from significant assistance facilitated through the District Assembly Common Fund.
In a letter addressed to the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Asante requested the procurement of 65 bags of rice and 25 boxes of cooking oil from Jorninas Company Limited.
The items, valued at GHC49,400, were intended for donation to the Muslim community during their annual fasting and prayers. The MP instructed that the payment for these items be made once the Common Fund was released.
Further records show additional expenditures on behalf of the MP. Jorninas Company Limited also supplied 35 pieces of soccer jerseys and six footballs, costing GHC45,628, with payments similarly drawn from the MP’s share of the Common Fund.
Contradictions in Public Statements
Hon. Asante has previously stated publicly that his political activities and initiatives have received no financial backing from the ruling government, painting a picture of self-sufficiency.
These newly uncovered documents, however, contradict those assertions and suggest otherwise.

The revelations have sparked criticism from sections of the public and political opponents, with many accusing the MP of being disingenuous about his relationship with the government. Some constituents have expressed disappointment, calling for greater transparency in how their representatives utilize public resources.
“This is an issue of accountability. MPs must be honest about how resources meant for development are used,” said a local resident.
