Widows Association Condemns Inflammatory Allegations by John Dumelo Against Hon. Lydia Seyram Alhassan

The Widows Association in the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency has strongly condemned recent remarks made by John Dumelo, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate, against Hon. Lydia Seyram Alhassan, the current Member of Parliament for the constituency and Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources.

During a public program organized by TV3, Mr. Dumelo accused Hon. Lydia Seyram Alhassan of being responsible for the death of her late husband.

The Widows Association described this allegation as “egregious,” “unsubstantiated,” and “deeply offensive” to widows and women across Ghana.”His words are an affront to the dignity of widows, who already face significant emotional and societal challenges after the loss of their spouses,” stated the Widows Association.

The group emphasized that Hon. Lydia Seyram Alhassan has demonstrated strength and resilience in her role as a public servant, even in the face of personal tragedy. Her efforts, they noted, have made her a symbol of empowerment and integrity for widows and women across the nation.

The association views Dumelo’s comments as not only a direct attack on Hon. Lydia Seyram Alhassan but also on all widows in the country. “It is disheartening that a public figure would resort to such baseless accusations to score political points, disregarding the pain and suffering that his words could cause,” the association added.

The Widows Association has expressed its full support for Hon. Lydia Seyram Alhassan and any legal action she may pursue to defend her reputation.

They urge all Ghanaians to reject divisive rhetoric and promote a society where widows and all women are treated with dignity and respect.

The statement concluded with a call for national solidarity against derogatory attacks on women and widows, reinforcing the need for a public discourse rooted in respect, empathy, and compassion.
