Carlos Calony Speaks Out After Assault and Detention by National Security Operatives

Award-winning journalist Carlos Calony has broken his silence following what he described as an “unprovoked and unjustifiable” assault and detention by operatives of Ghana’s National Security on Tuesday, July 30.
In a powerful statement of gratitude released today, Calony expressed profound appreciation for the widespread support he has received from across the country. He noted that every phone call, message, and act of solidarity has been “deeply moving” during what he called a challenging and disturbing moment in his life and career.
“I wish to express my profound gratitude to each and every one of you for the overwhelming support, concern, and solidarity,” Calony stated.
The journalist reserved special praise for his employer, the Multimedia Group Limited, applauding the Board, Management, and Staff for what he described as a “swift intervention” that not only ensured his safety but facilitated his prompt release. “This is the true mark of leadership that stands firmly behind its team,” he said.
He also acknowledged the robust response from the broader media fraternity in Ghana, including the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), for rising in defence of press freedom and condemning the actions of the security operatives.
According to Calony, the assault was more than a personal attack. “Let me be clear, this was not merely an attack on Carlos Calony, his crew, or an innocent eyewitness. It was an attack on free speech, on press freedom, and on the very principles of democracy Ghana has sworn to uphold,” he declared.
The journalist has called on authorities to ensure that justice is served and that concrete measures are instituted to protect media practitioners from further harm. He further cautioned against the misuse of military uniforms and the abuse of authority by rogue elements in the security services.
“The military uniform is a powerful symbol of discipline, honour, and national service. It must not be tainted by the actions of a few unscrupulous individuals,” he said.
The incident has sparked public outcry, with many demanding accountability and safeguards for journalists working in volatile or politically sensitive environments.
Calony’s statement concluded with a rallying call to all Ghanaians to unite in the defence of truth, justice, and freedom.
As pressure mounts on the government and security agencies to act, the media fraternity and civil society groups are closely watching how the case unfolds, warning that impunity must not be allowed to reign.
