The freight forwarders have noted that business have been quite bad to the extent that several companies have folded up and others who are still in business have had to lay off their staff leaving a skeletal staff.
This was made known in an interview with Dr Mawuli Tettey Ayenu, a member of the Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders.
Dr Tettey made this revelation when expressing his disappointment in the mid year budget as it has failed to address the dwindling imports of containers at the Port.
He says Ghana has lost most of its imports to neighboring Ports such as Ivory Coast and Togo, a situation he bemoaned.
He said if the Port charges are not thoroughly reviewed Ghana will eventually lose all imports as importers prefer to use the Togo and Ivory Coast ports rather than using the once vibrant Ghana Port.
He says since the NPP assumed power over the last eight years nothing the Tema Port has fared badly.
A visit to some offices at the Tema Port, most offices have shut down and those trying to stay afloat have just two or three working staff manning such facilities.
Some of the owners of these offices who spoke on anonymity said they have had to lay off their workers because nothing seems to be working.
They expressed their frustrations that they were hoping that the mid year budget would have addressed some of their concerns so that at least the last half of the year would be quite okay but nothing good was said about the dwindling business fortunes of the Port.
They are hoping that perhaps a change in government would possibly be the best option to get the Oort back on its feet. They thus hinted of a demonstration to express their concerns.
