Hausa Youth Ghana Hosts Colourful Durbar to Mark International Hausa Day

The Hausa Youth Ghana on Saturday, August 28, 2025, brought together prominent Muslim personalities, traditional leaders, and community members at the Forecourt of the State House in Accra to climax this year’s International Hausa Day celebration.
International Hausa Day is a globally recognized event dedicated to celebrating the vibrant culture, heritage, and language of the Hausa people.
The 2025 edition was marked with a public lecture on August 26, followed by a grand durbar that showcased the richness of Hausa traditions.
The durbar was highlighted by a colourful cultural display, with sub-chiefs of the Greater Accra Hausa Chief’s Palace engaging in spectacular horse riding an age old tradition of the Hausa people.
Guests were also treated to traditional music, Hausa dishes, and beverages, which added flavour to the celebration.
Speaking on behalf of former President John Dramani Mahama, the Minister of Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mubarak, commended Hausa Youth Ghana for their efforts in promoting and preserving the Hausa culture and language.
He acknowledged the immense contributions of the Hausa people to Ghana’s development and emphasized the importance of unity and peaceful coexistence.
However, the Minister raised concern over the rising trend of drug abuse among youth in Zongo communities, describing it as a growing threat.
He urged traditional and religious leaders to take an active role in addressing the menace while calling on community elders to safeguard the future of the younger generation.
Also addressing the gathering, Hon. Ben Abdallah Banda, former Coordinator for Zongo Development, highlighted the historical significance of the Hausa people in Ghana, stressing that their presence predates the nation’s independence.
He noted that Hausa is one of the ten globally recognized languages and urged the organizers to continue improving the celebration each year.
The General Secretary of the Council of Zongo Chiefs and Greater Accra Moshie Chief, Naaba Sigiri, applauded the initiative, describing it as a laudable effort that unites the Hausa and Zongo communities under one cultural umbrella.
He encouraged other ethnic groups within Zongo communities to emulate this example, citing the Zabarma community’s efforts as commendable.
The Greater Accra Zongo Youth Chief, Alhaji Sarki Salisu Maude, praised the organizers for introducing the lecture series as part of the celebration, noting that it provided a platform to deliberate on the future of the Hausa language.
He assured the community that Hausa Youth Ghana would follow up on issues raised during the discussions by engaging lawyers to present their concerns to the Constitutional Review Committee for consideration.
Distinguished personalities in attendance included the Greater Accra Hausa Chief, Alhaji Kabiru Kardiri English; the Greater Accra Zongo Chief, Sarki Alhaji Yahaya Hamisu Bako; the Greater Accra Zabarma Chief, Sarki Musah Yahaya Yendu; the Coordinator of Zongo Development, Hon. Alhaji Baba Lamin Abu Sadat; Magajiyoyi, and representatives of political parties.
This year’s celebration, held under the theme “Cultural Exchange and Integration: Hausa Influence on Ghanaian Society”, examined the Hausa language’s impact on Ghana’s cultural identity and development”.
