“We Need Justice”: Awutu Senya East Residents Cry Out Over Years of Violence in Kasoa

A group of residents under the banner of Concerned Citizens of Awutu Senya East Constituency (Asec) has issued a strong call for justice over what they describe as a series of violent attacks and human rights abuses that have plagued Kasoa between 2020 and 2024, particularly during Ghana’s general election periods.
In a statement released to the media, the group expressed deep concern about what they termed a “disturbing wave of violence” that has left victims and their families without justice for years. They lamented that despite numerous reports and eyewitness accounts, investigations into these incidents have either stalled or failed to yield any tangible results.
The statement cited several violent incidents, including the firing of gunshots at the Step to Christ Polling Station, the burning of NDC motorbikes, and the brutal assault and eventual death of Amadu Tuaric. Other cases mentioned include the shooting of NDC supporters at Kasoa Zongo School, and the death of a resident during the December 7, 2024 general elections.
The group also referenced the alleged illegal arrest and detention of the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Hon. Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, then parliamentary candidate along with her driver and aide, for over 24 hours without charge. They described the incident as a “gross violation of human rights,” particularly since the MP was then nursing a one-year-old baby.
The statement further recalled the 2020 shooting incident involving the former NPP MP, Mavis Hawa Koomson, who admitted to firing gunshots at a voter registration centre. According to the group, despite the existence of a police docket on the matter, no meaningful action has been taken.
Additionally, the group cited the December 7, 2020 attack on the convoy of Hon. Naa Koryoo Okunor, which allegedly left two individuals seriously injured, purportedly by persons affiliated with the then-MP, Hawa Koomson.
The Concerned Citizens of Asec have therefore urged the Ghana Police Service, the Attorney General’s Department, and other relevant authorities to expedite investigations into these cases and ensure that those responsible face the full rigours of the law.
“We will continue to push for prosecution until justice is served and our community can finally find closure,” the group declared.
